Geng

Han rates: 10/10 BABY!

After years of waiting, Les' Copaque Production finally released ‘GENG’, Malaysia’s first animated Feature film. I somehow managed to sneak in to catch the media screening of the movie one month before its official release.

Many years ago I was skeptical as to how this movie would turn out; being a victim of countless disappointments watching Malaysia made movies which includes “special effects”. I doubted that this new company started out by a bunch of youngsters from my University (MMU) could do any better, even if they hired some of the top film and animations students from MMU.

For once, I was happy to be proven wrong.

Well it’s not fair to compare it to the likes of WALL-E or Finding Nemo. But seriously this movie a definite must watch. It’s entertaining (in a Malaysian way) and quite meaningful. Although you will notice a lot of scenes were spoof from other famous movies (I counted roughly around 5 movie spoofs) but at least they got the formula right.

Simple storyline: Badrol and his friend Lim returns to the kampung (village) only to find the village being hunted by a mysterious Durian ghost. Thus the duo gang up with the other village members UPIN and IPIN (the lovable twins), Kak Ros (village beauty) and Rajoo (Indian kid which talks to animals). Together they uncover the mystery behind the Durian Ghost and what is really going on.

Former students of MMU, especially those from my batch (2006 Graduates) will find a lot of familiar characters and elements. Technical wise it’s not perfect but the hard work and effort that the team put in is definitely worth a standing ovation. Characters were actually very unique that audience will still remember them after the show is over. My favorite of course being Upin & Ipin, the super cute and lovable twins. Rajoo is also another favorite due to his animal talking abilities. I must admit the main character. Bardol, was rather normal. But no matter as the others was good enough to cover it.

GENG opens officially in cinemas 12 Feb 2009. Be sure to go and watch. Bring along your family as it is heartwarming and surely a perfect enjoyment for the whole family.

Han's favourite movies of 2008

Well 2008 was quite a movie year for me, I probaly watched more movie in 2008 then I did in any other year. So here's my favourite 5 (in no particular order)

The Dark Knight

Let’s start with The Dark Knight. Whoever says that The Mummy 3 is better than this movie should honestly die so Heath Ledger can torture you as the joker. People who say it’s boring have been watching too much cartoon and should learn how to GROW UP. I loved every single dialogue in the movie and I was also impressed with Aaron Eckhart portrayal of Harvey Dent a.k.a 2 Face. This is truly Batman for adults, unlike Batman forever which was catered for 15 years and below.

Be Kind Rewind

Be Kind Rewind totally rocks. Another intelligent comedy that had my mind blasting (quote from Russell Peter) since Bowfinger. What else could expect from Michel Gondry, who also did Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (which was of course one of my favorite movies). Jack Black was pretty good but I preferred Mos Def who played Mike, the loyal, nice black guy who devotes his duty to protecting the Movie shop. Seriously must watch, unless you’re a retard who prefers Disaster Movie or Meet the Spartans

Wall-E

Soooooooo Cuuuuuuuuuuuttttttttttteeeeeee. Nuff said. Wall-E’s feelings all expressed only through his cute binoculars eyes (and his cute robotic sound). Pixar has indeed created magic once again since the old Disney Classics. If anyone tell me this movie sucks possibly has no soul and no heart.

Ip-Man 叶问

I have non-Chinese friends who have watched this movie 3 times in the cinema. So yeah, that basically sums out how good this movie is. Donnie Yen portrayal of the Wing-Chun 永春 was classic. Fast yet graceful and deadly, Wing Chun has since been Google top searched item with people looking for places to learn it. The story line itself was pretty simple and straight forward but the scenes where powerful enough to captivate you in the moment. Much better then Dragon Tiger Gate 龙虎门 in my opinion.

Australia

Ok, I’ve been getting mixed reviews from this one. People either hate it or love it. I personally enjoyed it. 3 hour length I was entertained 90% of the time. Nicole Kidman combined with Hugh Jackman was a totally new chemistry all together. I find the story concept very, very similar to Pearl Harbor but this is way much better. More powerful, more moving and less boring. If you think this movie sucks then good for you, I enjoyed it, so shut up.

To prove my point of how good it is compare to pearl harbor, watch the youtube clip below.

Anyways what are your favourite picks of 2008?
