After years of waiting, Les' Copaque Production finally released ‘GENG’, Malaysia’s first animated Feature film. I somehow managed to sneak in to catch the media screening of the movie one month before its official release.
Many years ago I was skeptical as to how this movie would turn out; being a victim of countless disappointments watching Malaysia made movies which includes “special effects”. I doubted that this new company started out by a bunch of youngsters from my University (MMU) could do any better, even if they hired some of the top film and animations students from MMU.
For once, I was happy to be proven wrong.

Well it’s not fair to compare it to the likes of WALL-E or Finding Nemo. But seriously this movie a definite must watch. It’s entertaining (in a Malaysian way) and quite meaningful. Although you will notice a lot of scenes were spoof from other famous movies (I counted roughly around 5 movie spoofs) but at least they got the formula right.

Simple storyline: Badrol and his friend Lim returns to the kampung (village) only to find the village being hunted by a mysterious Durian ghost. Thus the duo gang up with the other village members UPIN and IPIN (the lovable twins), Kak Ros (village beauty) and Rajoo (Indian kid which talks to animals). Together they uncover the mystery behind the Durian Ghost and what is really going on.

Former students of MMU, especially those from my batch (2006 Graduates) will find a lot of familiar characters and elements. Technical wise it’s not perfect but the hard work and effort that the team put in is definitely worth a standing ovation. Characters were actually very unique that audience will still remember them after the show is over. My favorite of course being Upin & Ipin, the super cute and lovable twins. Rajoo is also another favorite due to his animal talking abilities. I must admit the main character. Bardol, was rather normal. But no matter as the others was good enough to cover it.
GENG opens officially in cinemas 12 Feb 2009. Be sure to go and watch. Bring along your family as it is heartwarming and surely a perfect enjoyment for the whole family.
